A Frustrated Bluegreen Owner Has Her Opportunity To Speak

A few weeks ago I saw a tweet from some expressing displeasure with Bluegreen for not being able to get out of a fully paid off timeshare.  I contacted the person and gave her the opportunity to tell her story.  This is it.  I've only made minor grammatical edits and deleted her name as she want to remain anonymous.  It's a long post, but very much on target and well worth your time.

Hello Lisa -

I take it you could read a little sarcasm into my tweet.  I apologize - I did not mean to offend. Fact is, I was venting and no one ever reads my tweets anyway.  Here is a synopsis of our situation.

We purchased a timeshare in what I think was January 2002.  I don't have paperwork in front of me.  We paid within a very short amount of time the full amount of the deed. We were young and in love and planned on spending all of our vacation time at Big Cedar Resort.  The Wilderness Club through Bluegreen seemed to be legit, after all - Bass Pro was one of the most respected businesses in our part of the country.  Everything through them is 5 star top notch.  We can drive there in half of a day, and spend quality time as a couple and family.

At the time, there was one lodge with one more coming, and maybe 13 cabins.  From day one, it has been a joke trying to stay there.  Or anywhere.  We rarely use any of the points. Ever.  Even when we vacation, we don't even bother trying to book through our points. Our maintenance fee we pay annually is well over $1000 (thanks to the fact the "2 bedroom" we signed up for was really a 1 bedroom and a lockout....so YAY...2 units...2 maintenance fees.)

I get so frustrated at the people who try to put a spin on owners who say, 'well you should have known what you were getting in to?" We get it.  At the time, we wanted what they were selling.  It has never ONE time, felt ANYTHING like what they were selling, EVER.

And I have never heard of anything that you couldn't be done with at some time.  You can sell a car.  You can sell a house.  You can wean your kids off of your salary at a certain age. You can give away a pet.  Lifestyles change.  Preferences change.  Priorities change.  I am THRILLED that some people are completely smitten with the timeshare lifestyle.  It should not be that big of a deal that we aren't as impressed for us.

But the fact that it appears to be the most locked in, binding, insanely ridiculous life-long contract eludes me. I watch my husband have a meltdown every year when fees roll around and he realizes that he works 90 hours plus a week and none of his family had time to use the points.  We can't plan anything in our lives more than 3 weeks out- and it is certainly not feasible for us to fly as a family, and then rent cars and then pay for the activities once we get somewhere.  We just aren't THAT into vacationing.  Something we did not know prior to having all our kids.

I am ALWAYS tempted to stand at Bass Pro or anywhere I see people trying to sign people up for these tours and pitches and wear a sign that says ASK ME WHAT MY EXPERIENCE IS...... which is sad.  I want people to enjoy the resorts and travel.  But how in God's name am I locked into this madness for life? I honestly cannot believe that no one has gone all postal on one of these places.  It is such a trapped feeling.  If I am being completely honest with you, when I think "timeshare" I think "slit my wrists." Extreme? Yes. Would I? Of course not. But that feels like the only way out.  BUT WAIT? Is it? Don't my kids have to inherit, then?  See how grotesquely crazy that sounds?  It is just a stupid one week vacation a year......it should be able to go away.  I just want to know how.  Thanks for letting me vent.

Lisa- this is my latest communication with someone. It sounds like every other communication I have ever had. Again --Amazed over the permanency. I could get a divorce easier than ridding our family off of a stupid purchase. Again- we had no regrets when we did it. We thought it SOUNDED awesome. Years later- after deed is several years paid in full- just have stupid maintenance fees to a resort that took a ridiculous turn away from the 5 star resort vision of Bass Pro, we just want to cut ties.

I have been directed to Pinnacle – Bluegreen’s sales office. They never do anything. They send out packets with a ridiculous amount of paperwork- once you hound them enough- but then nothing is ever done with it. We have not tried the give back the thing because everything I am finding online says they won't do it. We tried eBay for a dollar a few years ago and all that did was attract people who would "sell it for us" for a fee. My husband literally works in the fields in the farming industry 80-100 hours a week.  Labor intensive. I work up to 40 hours a week for free at my kids’ school as a volunteer coordinator. The last few times ours has been used has been as a donation for auctions- and then the guests that go are hounded about buying- so it is not a good experience.

When I have booked a trip (very rarely) they try to trap us into a meeting on your vacation to buy more points. Again- Big Cedar- the property where we thought we were buying was a 5 star resort. What the timeshare has created is a pitiful overcrowded stepchild version where I wouldn't want to spend my time. We have bought a vacation home in a location we love that fits our needs. It is the convenience and family time and luxury we thought we were buying into at the time of the timeshare purchase.  We are happy and fortunate. We just want to leave our past mistake behind us and move on.  That $1400+ we are giving to Bluegreen every year could go to our church, our school, our son’s mission trips. So many better useful places. Again- we have acquaintances who love their timeshares who use them faithfully. It is just not for us.

THIS IS THE E-MAIL THAT MY CLIENT RECEIVED FROM KELLY ROBINSON AT QUALITY TIMESHARE CLOSINGS IN BRANSON, MISSOURI

Once you sign a contract and go past your right of rescission, there is very little anyone can do for you unfortunately. If you have a loan, you probably cannot walk away without bad credit due to foreclosure. Or you can pay an attorney thousands of dollars to try to get them to forgive your debt.  Buyers are few and far between.  Resale market is at rock bottom prices. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. If you would like a referral to a resale broker or attorney, please call my office.

THIS IS THE E-MAIL THAT JASON MAAHS OF THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU IN SOUTHWEST MISSOURI SENT TO KELLY ROBINSON AT QUALITY TIMESHARE CLOSINGS IN BRANSON, MISSOURI

Hey Kelly,

I received this email earlier from someone needing to get out of their timeshare. I'm not afraid to admit that I am completely ignorant on the topic; I thought you may be able to help them out with your knowledge of the industry. I am forwarding you the email I have received and their contact email.
THIS IS THE E-MAIL THAT MY CLIENT SENT TO THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU IN SOUTHWEST MISSOURI

Message:
I am in need of trying to find out how to begin the process of cutting ties with BlueGreen Vacations Wilderness Club at Big Cedar. We have been members since 2002 I think. Paid well over $22,000 in full for and now pay maintenance fees annually that are basically equivalent to what a vacation would cost. We were young and naive and believed the salesperson. All we wanted to do was have more time at Big Cedar. What a sad joke that was. All we want to do is walk away. Relinquish the deed. If you research on line, it is easier to give up a child than it is a time share. It has totally ruined our honeymoon impression of what was the greatest resort this side of the Mississippi. I just need guidance from a real source, not another arm of the timeshare never ending scam, giving advice. You can sell a house, you can change careers, you can move out of the country, you can wean your child off of your bank account; there has got to be a legal, simplified, honest way to get out of a timeshare. It should not be a secret. Any help or guidance to the next step would be more than appreciated. Most Sincerely

Lisa, only think I can think of to make use of your points is to exchange them for Choice Privilege motel points. Then you can use them anywhere.

Lisa I "INHERITIED" my timeshare when I married as my wife and her ex husband bought it on their honeymoon. I don't like it but we have learned to make the most of it. We paid it off very quickly as to avoid thousands of dollars of interest adding up. If you cannot pay yours off, get a personal loan to pay it off and get away from the 15.99 / 16.99 % interest rate.

we have a small package of 8000 biannual points , deeded at Falls Village in Branson but we almost exclusively stay at Big Cedar. We have learned to avoid/minimize weekends, and depending on what we are going for considering different room sizes to help.

We always do the owner updates when we go and we negotiate our "prize" for each update.

We took a 4 night trip Tues-Sat the week leading up to Labor Day and they offered us $100 in Big Cedar bucks, we asked for $50 Big Cedar bucks and $50 in visa gift card...we used the $50 big cedar bucks to pay resort fees and dinner at Devils pool, and we used $25 of the gift card to eat at Cracker Barrel and the other $25 for gas.. in the end our 5 day 4 night stay cost us $82 and the majority of the $82 was from parking at Silver Dollar City 2 days and lunch at Silver Dollar City 2 days...

our 2 1/2 year old son had a blast at Silver Dollar City as well as all the pools and the lazy river at Big Cedar.

When we went back in November for a quick stay to see the Christmas lights at Silver Dollar City they offered us $100 in Big Cedar bucks unless we wanted to do the 2:30pm update...and the 2:30pm update was worth $150 big cedar bucks...we didn't spend any on that trip and when we go back the week before Labor day this year we will have that $150 big cedar bucks plus whatever we get this year to eat at the resort as well as use the new activity center that will include laser tag and bowling...

again I don't really like the time share, but we maximize the number of days we get every 2 years (10-14) on only 8000 points and we know that we will pay $550 in maint fees both years....but if our vacations are nearly free then it helps lessen the blow of the maintenance fees.

For those looking for an easy way to reduce / eliminate your maintenance fees try getting you a good cash back credit card and use your cash back money to pay your fees.

look for ways to maximize what you can do.

Has anyone used timeshareexit.com? We like others are in a never ending maintenance fee nightmare. This past January I started putting away money into savings just so I will have it when maintenance time comes. Most days we want to go on vacation aren't ever even available. There was even a 4 year span that we couldn't even go away due to finances bit still had to come up with $1000 in fees every year. Afraid of being scammed so back to first question regarding timeshareexitteam.com...

I just got off the phone with the Timeshare Exit Team rep, this is the outfit that Dave Ramsey endorses and after talking to them and they explained they don't sell timeshares they work to get owners out of the ownership legally and finally the fee was given, $3797 to get us out of our Blue Green timeshare and we will receive no monies this is to just get out of the ownership. We will lose all our "investment". I am not sure this is the way go go and would like other owners input before making a decision.
Thank you

Hi Lisa.
I think you have to die to get out of BlueGreen.
I dont understand this points system.
I purchased years ago as I was told it would be an investment.
At Oasis Lakes before the dreaded BlueGreen took over, and never accepted going into the points system.
Currently I am paying $2700.00 a year for two weeks 49 and 50.
Cant Sell
Cant Give away for nothing.
I have never signed a BlueGreen Contract.
Do you think that would help.

We are also BG owners who want to unload our timeshare, basically because BG properties are NEVER available, regardless of date, location, or length of stay. My husband fought for us to be able to use our points earlier this month at The Fountains in Orlando after being told that points we paid to carryover were not eligible to be used during the RED season and that the resort was booked for the rooms we were eligible to book. We spent two days at the resort and there were PLENTY of lounge chairs to spare--practically empty. We also attended a member refresher and were basically given the same spiel I keep reading in reviews ("you don't have enough points" "buy more points") which we refused to do. We were also referred to Pinnacle for selling our share and advised that we'd receive twenty cents for every dollar we'd spent. Now I'm reading all the consumer complaints online and see the Better Business Bureau rating of D+ for BG. I wish we had refused to purchase initially until we could have done our due diligence; a lesson we will not repeat. We may never recoup our money, but I will do everything possible to make certain others do not make the same mistake.

I wanted to use my 4000 vacation points Bluegreen gives you as a "GIFT", but it says blue or white seasons only. Since we have yet to use any points, we thought we may be able to enjoy just ONE vacation and everything is red or red high season that I have looked at many locations from now until November. If I don't want Bluegreen anymore, what will I have to do to get out? We have yet to use any of our points because our points amount will not cover any vacation we would like to take:( We are very disappointed with Bluegreen and if our LARGE payment a month can't even cover 1 week vacation a year, we feel it is pointless! After paying our annual dues and monthly payment, we are in debt and still have not taken ONE vacation. We are starting to feel as though this a scam. Feeling very disappointed, frustrated and angry! I
wished we were not Bluegreen owners

I recently bought into the Bluegreen timeshare this past December. I bought in low at 8,000 biennial points. Come to find out, the low amount of points I purchased doesn't do much for our vacation needs. I have been debating on either selling the points I have, or buying enough from elsewhere to improve my vacationing potentials. I went to the Pinnacle site and see that I can purchase 16000 annual points for $3,000, but after reading this it scares me to buy more and be stuck without the potential to sell. I would be interested in hearing your opinion. My e-mail is casandrasprague@yahoo.com

As of our last annual due date, October 31, 2016, I have not paid our club dues or maintenance fees. Our BlueGreen timeshare was paid in full (no financing) at time of purchase. I asked the BG phone rep what would happen if I stopped paying. Answer: they bill you again, including late fees; they cancel your club membership and lock you out (no problem); they turn the account over to Pinnacle, which is their own collection service. He stated that paid owners are NOT reported to national credit agencies.

So far, they have locked me out and turned me over to Pinnacle. My credit report shows no activity from BlueGreen or Pinnacle as of July 10, 2017.

In other words, I just gave up and wrote off the original purchase, but I refused to throw any more money at BlueGreen. Because my husband and I own our home and vehicles, with no debt, I am willing to take the chance that they ding my credit report. I will simply write to the credit agencies to dispute the issue, stateing that Blue Green is in breach of contract for not providing services.

I may end up regretting this course of action, but I cannot tolerate (1) trying to make a reservation, (2) paying a fee so the reservation I finally get can be cancelled, and (3) being refused a parking pass until I make a reservation to attend a meeting. No, done with that.

Hi lisa, my name is jonathan. i've been reading your comments on the blog. And i too am a victim of the bluegreen scam.

My girlfriend and i attended our local county fair one day. There, were a booth with a raffle. We didnt know what the raffle was about or what was the prize. We were given 2 tickets at now charge. We go ahead and enter these tickets into a computer besed system that ultimately chose me as the winner. My girlfriend and i were taken to the side and shown this vegas package for 290 dollars. My girlfriend was happy so i decided to buy it. Later the rep, who signed me and my girlfriend, said that we must attend a 4 hour presentation.

We spent a few weeks saving up money and requesting days off from our work place. Eventually we drove to vegas. 4 hours later and one stateline later. We arrive and had a decent time until the presentation arrived. I felt it would never end. My girlfriend signed up and with me right beside her. All while knowing, we barely make enough to qualify; let alone earning enough to pay for our own place.

We tried to enjoy the last few days at vegas but unfortunately we were vacationing the weekend of the mandalay bay mass shooting. My girlfriend and i are fine, But our "vacation" ended up being a bad experience plus a bad investment.

Lisa, anyway you can spare some info on how to get these bluegreen reps off our wallets?

Lisa, my mother is in the same situation as all above. She purchased the timeshare in 2009 in full and has yet to use it, ever. She tried getting out of it a year after full purchase and was told there is no way to recant. She does not want anything in return, she just wants out of the contract. She is not computer savvy so I am doing the extreme research to see if there is any loopholes especially when she has not even used it since the day of full purchase! The recently contacted her Oct 2017 to tell her that she was not using her timeshare to the full potential and her reply is correct, I have never used it, never been late on my MF and do not want it! Can I sign something to give it back to you and stop paying the fees, she was answered by telling her no but we can set you up for a scheduled vacation. She can not fly, she has had 7 back surgeries and very rarely geta out of the house. Her maintenance fee (she has due diligently paid without hesitation in worries of effecting her credit)could be a payment to her medical bills not covered by Medicare. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help with matter,

Hello Lisa I am in the same boat as everyone blogging. My wife and I were so rushed into signing, my head is still spinning. We had our 3 boys (15, 12. and 10 yrs old) waiting in a hotel room and we just wanted to sign and go. It all sounded so good. Mostly because I had just retired from the Marines, and anything that sounded like good, clean family time sounded right. Little did we know how wrong we were. Since we bought into this we have tried to get some of places they claim to be "available", but they never are. We have yet to use it. I just lost my job and we are barely making ends meet with my pension and her teaching salary. We still have 3 boys to send to college. Can you please help or guide me in the right direction to get out of this. The monthly payments and upcoming maintenance fee is draining us. Thank you in advance.

Hello, I humbly ask for you to send me your pointers as well. It's only been two years for us but our family dynamics have changed as well as my job. We are making payments on loans, 2 of them. Haven't used points, needed vacation time for emergencies and have paid approx. $10,000 in monthly fees and maintenance fees-we are trying to be proactive at this point. Selling would be great!

MrsZucco said...

I humbly ask for you to send me your pointers as well. We're only "in" 2 years, so we've got loans (2) but are paying each on time. Our family dynamics have changed as well as my job and the whole idea of using the points is just not going to work for us. Actually, truth be known I didn't want to do it but I had to sign because it's he law in the state of GA (?) That was July 2016, for like 11,000 points that we'd only be able to use every other year. When my spouse went back in for the October 2nd meeting, he signed for another 7,000 to allow us to have enough points for a vacation/family reunion every year. They never did call back for the consolidation of the 2 purchases, so the 2 loans remain. Consolidation companies won't do it because they are considered mortgages. We've got about $10,000 in between monthly payments and maintenance fees, (which is a little less than what I earn annually now) and of course the $50 to save our 1st year points into the 2nd year. Couldn't use it due to vacation time spent on terminal illness/death of my brother. No mercy. At this point we are being proactive. We could have used that money on the emergency, on trips in between to places we wanted to go-that of course don't have the places to use the points. It would be best to unload.

Hello like many of your bloggers, I too am stuck with this time share. I currently own $10,000. On the loan still. We were told you can vacation everywhere with 6000 points....um no you cant. I can never book because the availability isn’t available. The points you have to pay to keep for another year and then they change color and then are basically useless. I got a call from resort services and they offered me dinner at the Olive garden to meet with them. They said they were with Bluegreen. They said because a lot of owners were unhappy they started a buyback program and if I was interested they would have to offer me a fair market value for my timeshare, that day on the spot. So I thought great! I'm free. NO! I called blue green to confirm with them and they said that was not them and they don’t have a buyback program. I called Olive garden and they said the reservation was under resort services. I never went to the dinner because it was too far for me. I need your help, please get me out of the contract.

Frustrated No More: My Way Out of Bluegreen

If you scroll back to October, 2015, you will see my post full of frustration with BlueGreen. Because October 31 was our member year-end, I was contemplating going rogue and just not paying membership or maintenance fees. Note: DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU HAVE A MORTGAGE ON YOUR TIMESHARE. THEY WILL SUE YOU FOR DEFAULT.

I called customer service and requested a supervisor, then told him that we were not financially able to continue paying the member/maintenance fees and that we had experienced difficulty in getting reservations. I asked what measures BlueGreen would take regarding failure to pay. I was told that I would receive late notices and be locked out of using BlueGreen resorts. "But what about damaging comments going to the credit reporting bureaus", I asked. He replied that, since we owed nothing on the actual timeshare purchase, they did NOT report failure to pay to the credit agencies.

We did not pay. In the three years since, we have received three late notices (one every month in November/December/January. Then the lockout letter. At six months, we received a letter from Pinnacle, the BlueGreen collection service. I called the contact from the letter and explained we were no longer able to pay. The call was cordial and the rep was reasonable. I have continued to diligently checked my credit report from the three major services, and nothing was ever reported by BlueGreen regarding our failure to pay.

So, there it is. We already knew we would never recoup the original investment in the timeshare because there is absolutely no resale market. We just wanted out of the ever-looming cloud of BlueGreen.

Happy and BlueGreen-free!

We like everyone else on here have been lied to, scammed and thrown too much money down this hole? We are living o. Social Security and can not afford the yearly fees. We just want BG to just take it back and let us out. I am fixing to call them and see what happens.

Why can we not all get together with a class action suit to get our lives back?

As this continues to be one of my my most read and most commented posts, I’ll repeat some important points:

1) Do not provide your contact information in your comments as you’re opening yourself up to be contacted by unscrupulous companies who monitor this blog looking for their next victim
2) There is no easy way out of a timeshare that you still owe on, despite what scam exit companies will tell you
3) My e-mail address (for those of you who refuse to read my previous comments and/or the information about the blog) is lisaschreier617@aol.com
